The Department of Biology, now known as the School of Life Sciences (SLS), at Sun Yat-sen University (SYSU) was founded in 1924, as one of the earliest biology departments in China. With excellent teaching and research facilities, SLS has extended its directions to both traditional and cutting-edge research in the field of biology, including cell and molecular biology, ecological and evolutionary biology, as well as interdisciplinary investigation in life sciences.

At present, SLS places great emphasis on two core areas: "life and health" and "biological resources safety". In line with these areas, the school focuses on various research fields such as life omics, immunity and aging, microbial intelligence, biological control, farmed animal health and safety, and plant adversity. Several research areas at SLS, such as molecular biology and genetics, biology and biochemistry are ranked in the top 1‰, while botany and animal sciences is ranked in the top 1%, of global universities by ESI.
